Fact | The Umfraville lords of Penmark, who were among the greater lords of Glamorgan, certainly obtained extensive areas of Llancarfan, particularly in the Llanvithyn area, where they were major donors of the lands which formed a Margam grange. Presumably a certain Payn was a sub-tenant of Umfraville at Pancross. In the late 13th century and early 14th century there was a Philip Payn associated with Wrinston and Michaelston-le-Pit, a customary tenant of some status. His antecedents are unknown, but his successive overlords, the Reignys and the Raleghs, possessed the manor of Llancarfan, and a William de Reigny witnessed the late 12th-century lands near Pancross. Margam Abbey, about A.D. 1180, got the territory of Llanvithyn from Gilbert de Umfraville ; also 30 acres adjoining, and five crofts, from Hugh de Llancarvan, with the leave of his lord, H. de Umfraville.

MERGING ERROR | I believe this Gilbert is the one claimed to be the son of Robert de Umfreville of Penmark. The problem is for some strange reason, these researchers called his father Robert instead of Roger. It could be that in a record it was abbreviated to R. Umfreville and people assumed Robert instead of Roger. The fact that he is holding Llanvithyn is an indicator his properties eventually lead to the de Port-St. John family. The only way to that would be through his sister Mawd who married William Nereberd/Cantilupe and had Agnes Cantilupe who married Robert de Port-St. John of Basing. 18 Jun 2023 Suzanne St. John
