    Notes of Orson L. St. John dated 20 Jan 1998: When in Boston for a wedding, we stayed at the St. Botolph Club. Saturday morning I visited the Mass. Historical Genealogical Library to find the passenger list for Mathias (Mathew) H. St. John arriving in Dorchester, MA. 1631-2 from St. Botolf parish in London. There is a book confirming. (Mathew St. John b. 1590 was from St. Botolph; Mathias b. 1601 was from St. Nicholas Cole Abbey) - This needs resolved before assigning to him exclusively. 13 Dec 2014 S. St. John)

    It is ordered [January 16, 1636(7)] that Mathias Sension and Thomas Sampford shall keepe the Cowes this yeere to begin the 17th day of Aprill and to continue keepeing them till the 15th of November to have for their pay in keepeing 5 shill the head for as many as are brought in; the sayd five shill. p'head to be payd 1/3 in hand 1/3 at halfe the tyme the other at the end of the tyme.

    It is also ordered that all that have Cowes shall put them to the Keepers to be kept in the ordinary Cow pasture, and noen to be put away at the Necke of land or keepe them otherwise about the Towne or from the heard, one payne of 10* for [such] offending. Also that all the live Norwards from the meaning house shall [...] their Cows into the open place befor the meeteing house within an hower of [sunne] riseing and their the Keepers to be ready to drive them away and so to blow their horne along the Towne and whosoever bring not their cowes before Mr. Stoughtons house within an hower of sunnerising, the Keepers shall stay no longer [but] drive away those which are redy to the Pasture and those which through their [owne] neglect have their Cowes behind shall not make that any Barre of payment to the Keepers.

You may do me right in writeing mee the verity of the passages betweene Phillip & Thomas. one writes Mr. St Jno that Phillip is in Thomas debt, & Phillip writes me Cannot drawe Thomas to Account, by wch Delayes I am kept wthout my moneyes. the like Mr. Richbel, he deteineth from mee Diego for Br: Debt & whether it bee recovered or not I know not, If you have in yor hands of his pray you doe mee right, for i must be satesfyed out of the goods you have of his before you goe for Ma. I marvaile I have not a word from Phillip by Cossen Bennet of the goods hath of mine in his hands.     The same day at the motion of Nathaniell Clap, and in referrance to the Voate of the towne the 7th of this Instant in order to the Exchange of land that lys wheer Mr. Sensions house stood, the Select men doe appoint Richard Withington and Daniell Preston to Vew the house and land and the land that he will give in exchange. and as they doe Judge meete soe it shalbe determined.
